One of the magical parts (there are many!) about virtual assistants is they can specialize in any area of support you need. Virtual assistants can specialize in graphic design, administration tasks, social media strategy or implementation, tech, or so many other areas. Or you might find someone who is a “Jack or Jill of all trades.” This person can have a pretty good idea of all these things but doesn’t specialize in one. If you want to get the most out of the experience of using a virtual assistant, you must look at this as a relationship. It takes time for any relationship to blossom. There are ups and there are downs. Even after years of working with someone you still have to put in effort to keep the relationship alive, avoid miscommunication, and general effort to make it a success. Remember that this is your business. You are not going to get anyone who is as passionate about it as you. And no one will ever know it as well as you. Outsourcing even to really good people doesn’t mean that you get to disengage totally from the tasks. The relationship goes two-ways and needs support on both ends for it to be successful. Invest in the relationship. The best way to get the best out of a virtual assistant is to give them your best. Strive to be his or her favorite client and see what blossoms.
I believe that everyone has to be open to communicating their boundaries. Set expectations in advance with your VA and be open to your VA setting his or her expectations with you as well.
